Ulaanbaatar is the capital and largest city of Mongolia. The city is an independent municipality and not part of another province. In 2013 its population was over one million three hundred thousand inhabitants.

Located in the north, slightly east of central Mongolia, the city lies in the valley formed by the Bogdh Khan, Songino Khairkhan, Chingeltei and Bayanzurkh mountains and is crossed by the Tuul River, 1,350 meters above sea level. It is the cultural, industrial and financial center and a transportation hub connected by road with all major cities of Mongolia, and by railway with the Trans Mongolian and Chinese rail system.

Ulaanbaatar was founded in 1639 as a center of Buddhist monasteries. In the twentieth centurythe city became a major manufacturing center characterized by wide boulevards, squares and Soviet-style architecture of the mid-twentieth century. Structurally it consists of a Soviet-style central district, surrounded by residential towers and mixed with concrete and yurts. It is the cheapest Asian capital for foreign workers
